We are in the process of setting up a pilot of a computerised system run
as a (cheaper) service from our local Path lab. The system is run by
two part time practice nurses, with added training.. ie not true" nurse
practitioners", and is run on a very strict inbuilt protocol within the
programme. The whole project is overseen by our local haematologist,
with local "supervision" by one of our GP Consortium leads. The
Haematologist is very keen.. the trust less so, as it will mean a small
drop in income next budget year. We are keen, as the DGH service is
relatively expensive, and the present system of the on-call GP casting
an eye over the phoned result, and "advising" a change of dose is hardly
best-practice... although I suspect that a lot of us still do this.
The system simply involves a finger-prick, and the result and suggested
dose-change is ready in 2... (yes two).. minutes.. (alledgedly :-) The
patients are keen because the is no venepuncture, and far less distance
to travel. For the immobile we are setting up extra pateint transport
facilities... I hope it all works! :=}
