Me and my partners would have done the same, i.e. watchful waiting, but
without the throat swab. Theres an interesting study from, I think,
about 8 years ago that shows that if you give penicillin in the first 48
hours of the illness it significantly increases the risk of recurrence
in the next few weeks since the normal antibody response is inhibited.
