I have been trying to follow the NHS networking confidentiality issue and it is good to know that I am not the only GP who has anxieties that worries about confidentiality could make the system unusable.
Confidentiality of medical records is extremely important but good communication between GPs and other providers of care within the NHS is equally important.
The idea that a patient would have to specify who within the NHS should have access to each individual piece of information about themselves is foolish. Patients should indeed be (and are) aware that information is being passed on but it is self evident that a patient cannot receive adequate care unless that information is passed on. We need to ensure that access to this information is only available to those who have a proper professional use for that information.
