It is not just the above computer and software suppliers who are
interested in doing this. The providers of databases for the big
finance houses in London are very interested in extending their existing
services into the NHS. They already supply a centralised service to
companies that insist on maximum secrecy on their data, immediate access
to it, and full recovery in case of breakdown. They offer the NHS the
prospect of monitoring every doctor's prescribing, down to the last
packet of omeprazole.
