I agree. Prof Ramsey's data stops at 70 because a) Noone has done the studies
in the elderly and , much more importantly, life expectancy over 70 begins to
have a 3% risk of death per annum anyway.You can't cure the inevitable.
Having said that I feel the evidence that I have seen him present twice for
the treatment of those aged 45 - 65 seems pretty convincing. His team has
looked at the rational behind the treatment of hypertension. The current
reccommended cut offs for treatment (160/90) equate to a risk of a coronary
event or cva due to the hypertension of around 3% p.a. If we all agree that
this is the level of risk for hypertension, then it seems logical that we
should accept treatment levels of this risk for other causes of premature
death/morbidity.
