As well as the saving in storage requirements that Manpreet notes,
can I add two others
* storing as text will allow free text searching ,
* storing as text will allow proper provision of items such as
digital signatures, non-revocation and the like.
The real pity of it all is that because there is no agreeement on a
realistic message exchanging system, people are being forced into
nonsenses like scanning in the hard-copy output of someone else's word
processed document, much of which consists of standard information,
together with a relatively small chunk of free text.
