Ciao - I know that chaperones and PRs and PVs already seem to have gone out
with the tide but please forgive me for bringing it up again, although for a
different reason. I joined the list over a year ago and, being a Yankee
from New York transplanted here in Italy for the past 20 years, I have never
previously had contact with my British collegues and obviously British
termininology. In fact, in the first few messages I received, you guys were
in a battle regarding the use of nightingales in surgeries or something to
the like. I did figure out what you were talking about regarding
nightingales but surgeries had me stumped for a while. Being a GP and not
having anything to do with surgery and little to do with surgeons, I thought
that I joined the wrong list - but - seeing the group discusss surgeries
without mentioning surgical interventions and following the banter, I did
soon figure out that what you fellows call surgeries, we call offices. -
So much for all that. - Now to get back to the original subject - PRs and
PVs - Rectals and Vaginals - In my day and where I come from, rectals were
called rectals and vaginals were called vaginals - no acronyms.
I'm still trying to figure out what the "P" stands for in PR and PV. I
thought initally that it stood for "percutaneous" but by virtue of the true
meaning of the word, it seems to be inappropriate since skin is not being
pierced. So, I concluded that since we GPs working in a National Health
System are starved for recognition and respect, the "P" must stand for
"Professional" - you only get a *Professional* rectal or vaginal from a
physician, in contrast to an AR or AV, the "A" standing for "Amature", the
kind you can get from a friend or acquaintance, the kind where quantity in
time and/or frequency may be attempted to compensate for quality! The
eternal difference between an amature and a professional.
As far as the supermarket manager lurkers are concerned perhaps now
considering the prospect of offering ARs and AVs with cholesterol checks,
I'll leave comments and suggestions in this regard to some of the more
prolific participants of the list.
Saluti - Fred
PS - I received two message recently, one on this list and one private
(Antony) mentioning that I left the crew. Not true - never did! Still here
fighting our version of the NHS.
PSS - What does the "P" really stand for?
