Please save the date for the next BSA Medical Sociology London Study Group event, taking place on Thursday 18 April from 5:30-6:30pm in Foyer Seminar Room 1.01, Cruciform Building, Gower Street, University College London.
At this session, we will be discussing the challenges of being a sociologist or critical social sciences scholar within a biomedically orientated academic department. We have invited a panel of sociologists at different career stages to share their experiences and then discuss how we might be able to respond to these challenges.
Some of the questions we are hoping to discuss include:
* How can we do fulfilling and engaging work that is often framed as secondary or in service to biomedical research?
* How can we sustain critical engagement with health and biomedicine while working closely with clinicians?
* How can we navigate institutional systems that recognise and reward achievement based on biomedical disciplinary norms?
* Is this a unique problem for medical sociologists? What inspiration can we draw from other interdisciplinary practices?
Speakers for the evening are:
* Dr Anna Dowrick (University of Oxford)
* Dr Sam Miles (Queen Mary University of London)
* Dr Sara Paparini (Queen Mary University of London)
* Prof Fiona Stevenson (University College London)
The session will be chaired by Emily Nicholls (UCL) and Tom Witney (UCL).
Registration would be helpful but is not required: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bsa-med-soc-london-study-group-april-event-tickets-870894838907?aff=oddtdtcreator
ALL WELCOME!
Kind regards,
