Dear list members,
in 2024, we commemorate the 1500th anniversary of the passing of Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius (d. 25 October 524 in Pavia, Italy), a pivotal figure bridging the realms of Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Boëthius’ multifaceted body of work laid the foundations for European knowledge, philosophy, and culture for centuries to come and left an enduring impact.
To honour this significant milestone, the Association for Central European Cultural Studies in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts at Charles University in Prague are hosting an international interdisciplinary symposium on 24–25 October 2024 in Prague, Czech Republic. Scholars are invited to submit papers concerned with Boëthius’ life, contributions, and his lasting influence on European scholarship and culture from the early Middle Ages to the present day.
We invite proposals for individual 20-minute papers that focus on:
. Boëthius: Man and His Time
. Philosophy
. Theology
. Mathematics
. Music and Music Theory
. Literature and Fine Arts
. Boëthian manuscripts and prints from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century
. Reception of Boëthius in nationally oriented milieus of the 19th and the 20th centuries
Please send your proposals (max. 200 words) to [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask] by 31 May 2024. Conference languages include English (preferred), German, French, and Italian.
Sincerely,
