[Online event] Rural idyll? Living with and responding to domestic abuse in rural, remote and island Scotland (May 01, 18:00-19:30)

Robert Gordon University, School of Applied Social Studies

This presentation brings together the findings of two research projects examining women’s experiences of domestic abuse and professional responses in rural, remote and island areas of Scotland. The findings focus specifically on the policing of domestic abuse, public and third sector support and women specialist services, including multi-agency responses. Based on the narratives of victim-survivors and professionals, this seminar will be of interest to those responding to domestic abuse, as well as to those interested in rural, remote and island contexts.

About the Presenters

Dr Anni Donaldson (University of Strathclyde): Anni is a feminist oral historian, researcher, course author, consultant and writer specialising in domestic abuse and violence against women. She co-authored the Equally Safe in Higher Education Toolkit for preventing gender-based violence in Scottish universities. Anni has written an oral history of domestic abuse in post-war Scotland.

Prof Sarah Pedersen (Robert Gordon University): Sarah is Professor of Communication and Media and Dean of the Graduate School at RGU. Her research focuses around women’s use of the media for political purposes and women’s rights in Scotland.

Dr Natascha Mueller-Hirth (Robert Gordon University): Natascha is a political sociologist and Associate Dean for Research at Robert Gordon University. Her research seeks to understand how people experience and resist violence, conflict and marginalisation, utilising qualitative methodologies to examine issues around gender, informality and environmental change.

Sarah’s and Natascha’s research (with Leia Miller) on the policing of gender-based violence in remote and rural areas of Scotland has won the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR) 2023 Impact Award and has been shortlisted for The Herald Research Project of the Year (2024).
