Job opportunity!
*Opportunity for a humanities/social sciences PDRA to work on an interdisciplinary project on geothermal resources in the Caribbean. Based across the Oxford Martin School, History Faculty and Smith School, University of Oxford.*
We have an exciting opportunity for a ca. 2-year full-time, fixed-term Postdoctoral Research Associate to work as part of a new interdisciplinary programme funded by the Oxford Martin School called 'Rethinking Natural Resources' (https://www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/rethinking-natural-resources/). The overall project seeks to explore the potential for geothermal fluids to provide new sources of energy and raw materials; to devise new strategies for their recovery; and implement new ways to ensure equitable access to communities where these resources occur. This project has begun with a case study on the Caribbean Island of Montserrat.
We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher from a humanities, social sciences or interdisciplinary background, to work with Amanda Power (History), Caitlin McElroy (the Smith School) and David Pyle (Earth Sciences) on the theme of equitable extraction and social license. The successful candidate will undertake archival, literature and field work to examine relevant aspects of Montserrat’s history, and from these prepare working theories and analyse qualitative and/or quantitative data, reviewing and refining theories as appropriate, and draw on and develop research methodologies on the impact of extractive industries on populations and environments in the Global South as a lens to examine the unique contemporary situation on Montserrat.
