Hello Martin,

indeed I sympathise with your general attitude towards GBINs,
but as long as you have at your disposal the right version of
the relevant GaiaTools classes, it shouldn't be too painful to
get topcat/stilts to work with them.

If you have MDBExplorer in a standalone form
(e.g. MDBExplorerStandalone.jar) you can use that.
If you have the classes scattered over a large number of jar files
it could be more complicated. But basically you just need to make
sure that these classes are on the topcat/stilts classpath at
runtime, e.g. by doing

   java -classpath /path/to/MDBExplorerStandalone.jar:/path/to/topcat-full.jar \
        uk.ac.starlink.topcat.Driver

You can add -stilts to the above to run stilts instead;
if you're going to want these GBINs more than once you might want
to convert them all to e.g. FITS format and then forget about the
originals.

(There are various other equivalent ways to do the invocation, see:
https://www.star.bristol.ac.uk/mbt/topcat/sun253/jvmClasspath.html
or https://www.star.bristol.ac.uk/mbt/stilts/sun256/invoke.html)

There's a full discussion here:

   http://www.starlink.ac.uk/topcat/sun253/inGbin.html

Get back to me if you have any problems (maybe off-list, since
GBINs are a bit special-interest).

And if I need to use them, I use the Gaia MDBexplorer to read them and then send them via SAMP to e.g. TOPCAT. This generally works. However, now I have a set of more than 50 gbin files, and so the MDBexplorer solutions isn't exactly very attractive. Now, I know that TOPCAT has the option to read gbin files, but when I try this, I get the error message java.io.exception GaiaTools classes not available? I.e. I need to install those classes. how do you do that?
