Speaker: Prof. Haina JIN, Communication University of China

Film Translation in China

Film translation played an important role in cross-cultural communication, industrial development, and social integration in China. Vibrant film translation activities can be seen in three main directions: translating foreign films into Chinese, translating Chinese films into foreign languages and translating films into ethnic minority languages in China. This talk will give a panoramic view of film translation in China today. Translation policies, key translation institutions, status of the translators, modes of translation, and future development will be discussed in this talk.

Haina Jin is a professor of translation, cinema, and transcultural studies at the Communication University of China. Her research interests include film translation, translation history, and film history. She is the chair researcher of the China National Social Science Foundation Major Research Project, “A General History of Film Translation in China.” She is also the editor-in-chief of Journal of Chinese Film Studies (De Gruyter).

About this event.

The FTT Research Seminar Series is hosted by the University of Reading and showcases research from scholars in Film, Theatre and Television. The Seminar celebrates the exciting intersection of these fields within our department and seeks to support collaboration and conversation across Film, Theatre, and Television globally.

Each invited paper is 25-30 minutes long and is followed by a participatory Q&A discussion. This seminar will be online.

Warm wishes,

Tonia Kazakopoulou
