We have a couple of main uses for it internally: our CCTV system and our Crestron AV system - both of these use ASM and IPv4.
Because of the nature of the University network, these are inter-domain in the sense that they're in separate ASs/PIM domains and need MSDP internally.
I'm not aware of anyone using it in and out of the University network any more -- it works last time I tried, and I don't think we broke it, but I think it's dying off. The use for multicast internally doesn't seem to have gone away though.
We have had issues with all this on Cisco SDA, though, and had some long-running TAC cases to resolve them, which I think they all are now.
