Hi everyone
I've been asked to share this call for survey respondents (below) by a colleague interested in the experiences of those working in HE who are also carers. As such not only of relevance for list members in this situation, but the outcomes may be of interest to those focused on precarity in academia, EDI, etc. I hoe it's ok to share a non-SPA affiliated call for participation on this list.
Margaret
Dear Colleagues
I am sharing this final call as we will be closing our survey of carers in UK HE at the end of the month. Many thanks to those of you who have replied. To be eligible, you need to be employed by a UK-based university and to be a carer (broadly understood, including as a parent, for a friend, a relative etc.). Here’s the link:
https://angliaruskin.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/national-carers-survey-uk . The outcomes will help us to better understand the experiences of carers in higher education and to provide recommendations to the sector.
We have received ethical approval for this project and are happy to address any question.
Warm wishes
Marie-Pierre

Subject: CFP RGS-IBG 2024 - Embracing Diversity in Later Life: Exploring (In)equalities Among Ethnic Minority/Immigrant Older Adults
Dear Colleagues,
*Apologies for cross posting*

*Convenors: *Mengxing, Prof Nissa Finney, Dr Jo Mhairi Hale
Population and Health Research Group, School of Geography and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews
*Sponsor: *The Population Geography Research Group <https://populationgeographies.com/> (PopGRG)
*Format:* Paper session, in person.
As we celebrate the significant achievement of increased longevity in human history, it is imperative to acknowledge that not all individuals can anticipate a wealthy, healthy, or prolonged life in their later years. The experiences of ageing are markedly diverse, shaped by geographic location and social positions, creating substantial disparities among ageing populations. Unfortunately, research and policy on ageing frequently overlook the pervasive inequalities that impact older adults, particularly those from immigrant and ethnic minority backgrounds.
This session seeks to delve into the intricate tapestry of later life, emphasizing its inherent heterogeneity and diversity, with a specific focus on ethnic minority/immigrant adults. By critically interrogating the (in)equalities associated with ageing, we aim to illuminate the multifaceted dimensions of the ageing process for these populations. Our focus extends beyond traditional perspectives, considering the intricate interplay of socio-economic factors, geographic locations, cultural contexts and experiences of racism that significantly influence the ageing experience for ethnic minority/immigrant older adults.
We invite contributions that challenge existing paradigms, fostering a nuanced understanding of ageing that acknowledges and embraces its inherent diversity. By shedding light on the complex interplay between diversity, heterogeneity, and health & social (in)equality, we aspire to advance a more comprehensive and inclusive discourse on contemporary societal ageing.
*Topics for papers may include but are not limited to:*
-
Cultural and Ethnic Dimensions of Ageing: Exploring the unique
challenges and opportunities faced by diverse cultural and ethnic groups in
the ageing process.
-
Social Determinants of Health in Later Life: Investigating the role of
social factors in shaping health outcomes among ethnic minority/immigrant
older adults, considering the intersectionality of their experiences.
-
Cumulative Inequalities Across the Lifespan: Examining how disparities
accumulate over the life course, influencing the experiences of ageing
among ethnic minority/immigrant older adults.
-
Intersectionality in Ageing Research: Recognising the intersection of
various social categories, such as gender, ethnicity/race, class, and
immigration status, and their impact on the ageing process for ethnic
minority/immigrant older adults.
-
Policy Implications for Ageing and Diversity: Discussing policy
frameworks that address the complex and varied needs of ethnic
minority/immigrant ageing populations.
-
Methods for researching diversity and inequality in later life.
