The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world's largest humanitarian organization, with 191 member National Societies. We have opened two paid archives intern positions for archival studies students and recent graduates at our office in Geneva, Switzerland, one to work with paper records and the second to work with audio-visual records. Archives intern position – paper archives

The IFRC is hiring an archival studies student or recent archival studies graduate for 12 weeks to work as an intern on an archival project to arrange and describe paper records in its office in Geneva, Switzerland. The successful candidate may start in late April/early May 2024, or in September 2024.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Appraise (in consultation with supervisor) paper records in storage to determine which should be transferred to the Archives.
• Arrange and describe the paper records, and enter the descriptions into a database.
• Assess the physical condition of the paper records and identify those requiring conservation treatment.
• Re-box and re-file the records.
• Share outputs of internship as appropriate, for example in an issue of the monthly IFRC Archives Bulletin.
Qualifications:
• Be currently enrolled in a university or equivalent level archival studies programme, or have graduated recently (less than 1 year before the date of hiring) from a university or equivalent level archival studies programme.
• Be able to read and write in English
• Be able to read French, as some of the records are only in French.
Remuneration:
• A daily allowance is paid to interns for each day worked at the IFRC (75 CHF per day worked).
• Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, insurance and living expenses are the sole responsibility of interns themselves.

Archives intern position – audio-visual archives

The IFRC is hiring an archival studies student or recent archival studies graduate for 12 weeks to work as an intern on an audio-visual archival project in its office in Geneva, Switzerland. The successful candidate may start in late April/early May 2024, or in September 2024.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
• Write time-coded descriptions of digitized films for the historic Red Cross Red Crescent YouTube channel and for shaRED, IFRC’s Digital Asset Management System. Research copyright position of films to advise on publication risk. Learn basics of audio-visual editing, to prepare the films for online publication.
• Correct and supplement descriptions of migrated assets in shaRED, including appraisal of assets to identify potentially redundant material.
• Additional tasks to assist the audio-visual archivist as required, such as assisting with research requests or checking deliveries of digitized material.
• Appraise (in consultation with supervisor) photograph prints and negatives in storage to determine which should be transferred to the Archives. Describe the photographs and enter the descriptions into shaRED.
• Re-box and re-file the photographs.
• Share outputs of internship as appropriate, for example in an issue of the monthly IFRC Archives Bulletin.
Qualifications:
• Be currently enrolled in a university or equivalent level archival studies programme, or have graduated recently (less than 1 year before the date of hiring) from a university or equivalent level archival studies programme.

• Good command of another IFRC official language (French, Spanish or Arabic) is desirable.
