Dear Fan studies folks,
(We will be sharing this to the AoIR list as well, so customary apologies if this reaches you twice.)
At last year’s AoIR conference in Philadelphia, we convened a panel on fandom and politics, which ended up very well-attended and setting off some fantastic questions, and we are looking to do a follow-up panel and hoping some of you might be interested. Pre-constituting the panel before submission allowed us great lead-time in terms of bringing together authors from across the globe, and in framing and tying each paper together for more focused discussion.
We’re extending this focus for submission into this year’s conference in Sheffield and the theme of industry, as well as our ‘home field’ of polarisation and partisanship in our research at QUT.
We’d love to hear from anyone with research at the intersections of fandom/fan studies and political polarisation online, particularly with regard to the growing industrialisation and commodification of performing identity and community:
• how fan communities respond directly to this changing online landscape,
• how these changes are more indirectly reflected in the behaviours of fans or community groups online,
• and/or any other overlaps or adjacent topics.
We invite anyone interested to contact us (ideally with a draft abstract) before Tuesday 20th February, so we can have a quick turn-around on panel organisation and allow others to submit papers individually before the 1 March deadline.
Please send replies to [log in to unmask]
Kind regards,
Sam Vilkins & Sebastian Svegaard
