Land of woke and glory? The British war on wokeness (12.03.24 – 18:00-19:30)
"So, I mean, woke is sort of the idea that … This is going to be one of those moments that goes viral."
- Bethany Mandel
The above clip, in which author Bethany Mandel struggled to define the topic of her book, indeed went viral. Wokeness is discussed in the media on a daily basis, and has been called "one of the biggest threats to modern civilisation" by the then world's richest man. Yet its specific meaning is extremely vague. The term originated among black American communities in the early twentieth century, referring to an awareness of different socio-political pressures. However, it's since been applied to various topics, from academic freedom and environmental activism to the race of Dwarves in Rings of Power and what songs get played at the Proms. Most often, it's used to dismiss rather than argue for causes. In this event, through a mixture of presentations and panel discussions, Dr David Smith, Dr Huw Davies and Dr Sheena MacRae shall address the weaponisation of woke in the British press and online. Topics include moral panics, "cancel culture,” "cultural Marxism", and a supposed war against the West by "globalist" elites.
The panel:
David is a psychologist who is particularly interested in online identities/movements. His recent work has concentrated on the manosphere and other conservative movements.
Sheena works on the interactions between policy, education, media and politics from a digital sociology perspective and is currently researching emerging moral panics around politics and PHSE in schools.
Huw is a sociologist with expertise in digital technologies, digital media, and social and political theory who is working as a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh's School of Education.
