Dear All

]Just a reminder:

The Bernoulli Society Committee for Statistical Network Science is happy to invite you to the following talk.

February 7
1-2 pm on Zoom
Professor Sarika Jalan (Serb Power Fellow), Department of Physics, IIT Indore
Title: Coupled Dynamics on Hypergraphs: Beyond pairwise Interactions

Abstract: Since long-modelling real-world complex systems are made up of a large number of interacting dynamical units, they incorporate only pairwise interactions. Increasingly, it has been realized that a variety of complex systems, such as the Brain, society, weather, etc., not only have their units forming higher-order interactions, but also such interactions might govern the associated coupled dynamics, yielding completely different behaviours than those predicted by pairwise interactions. For example, the coupled phase oscillator model with higher-order interactions depicts an abrupt first-order phase transition to synchronization contrary to the smooth second-order transition for pairwise coupling. Using phase-lagged coupled Kuramoto oscillators with higher-order couplings as a case study, we will demonstrate such a behaviour: first-order transition to cluster synchronization along with associated numerical and analytical challenges.

Bio:
Sarika Jalan is a Professor at Indian Institute of Technology Indore in the Department of Physics. Before joining IIT Indore, Sarika was senior research scientist at NUS, Singapore. She did her PhD in Physics at the Physical Research Laboratory Ahmedabad, followed by Post Doctorate at Max-Planck-Institute for Mathematics in Sciences Leipzig, and Max-Planck-Institute for Physics of Complex Systems Dresden, Germany. Currently, she is Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Computational Science (JOCS Elsevier), and a board member of NetSci Society USA. She was elected executive member of Complex Systems Society, member of the Complexity Science Institute NTU Singapore, and member of the national advisory committee CNSD. She is Associate Editor of Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, and has recently been awarded with the prestigious serb Power Fellow by the department of science and technology, Government of India. Dr. Jalan had been holding visiting scientist positions at Max-Planck-Institute of complex systems Dresden, TU Berlin, IBS center for theoretical physics Daejeon South Korea, and Nizhny Novgorod University Russia. So far Dr. Jalan has published over 100 scientific research papers in peer reviewed journals in the general area of complex systems and nonlinear dynamics, and in particular, on synchronisation and higher-order interactions.
