Dear all,
We have 40+ walking sticks in our Frederick Lanchester collection at Coventry University, which were carved by Fred's brother George using wood and branches found during walks.
Most of them are three feet long and have a carved face or animal at the top which can be as long/wide as four inches. These were housed in two very old wooden cabinets and held in place in the middle by spring clips while the bottom of the stick rested on a cork base.
I have already emptied one of the cabinets because it wasn't secure and well past its useful life. The sticks from this cabinet are currently lying flat on shelves and supported/protected by foam, tissue paper etc; or housed flat in long boxes. This takes up much needed shelf space so I'm looking for alternatives. One of the options is prongs attached to a small metal plate that could be hung from art storage racking. The prongs have grooves into which the sticks can be laid flat and supported at each end. The costs of getting these in the required prong length were extremely prohibitive as they are manufactured abroad and almost half of the cost was for delivery.
Another option is to have a bag for each stick so that they could be tethered to the art racking by using suitable ties at the top and bottom of the stick bags.
I'd be grateful for thoughts and comments on how to solve this problem. I'll do a summary if there are enough suggestions.
Regards,
Gary Collins
