Dear all,
Thank you Mary for sharing the link and attachment. Good on the runner-fundraiser for his 19:59 per mile pace. He was 3 hours faster than the final final finisher (how lonely it must have been without cheering onlookers handing out jelly babies past 23:00h).
Our discussion on slow running on this list shows the need to resolutely move the discourse to inclusion and social justice. This is more so as this mailing list reaches its 10th year (!) next summer (which was created as a legacy of the RUN! RUN! RUN! International Festival of Running 2014) As also made clear at the Running Artfully Network activity over summer this year curated by Véronique Chance, the dominant story of the heroic white male running to conquer the elements is long over. David Hindley's chapter from his own book (thank you for generously sharing that) is a great example of how we can open up spaces (academic, creative and more) to include and lead these discussions.
Here are two interesting articles that you might have seen on the Guardian on how not all running body-minds are the same (no paywall for either, and no need to sign up if you click 'I'll do it later'):
- ‘A bit strange’: hiking group in Germany reported to police as illegal migrants. Club consisting of many Syrians living in Germany has its trip interrupted. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/24/german-hiking-group-reported-police-illegal-migrants
- Ultrarunner Sabrina Pace-Humphreys on racing, racism and learning to love the outdoors. The aptly-named ultrarunner made a reference to Ahmed Ahmaud Arbery, the Black man murdered by two white men when her ran in a white neighbourhood: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/dec/24/i-had-to-find-a-way-to-survive-sabrina-pace-humphreys-on-race-and-trail-running
Happy 2024 all
best wishes
Kai
