[Online event] Intimate Partner Violence: The Second Pandemic? Tuesday 14th November
Robert Gordon University School of Applied Social Studies community seminar series
During the Covid pandemic, lockdown measures resulted in a global increase in intimate partner violence, with some helplines and drop-in centres reporting increases of up to 50% in their areas. Because of their relative invisibility, sexual-minority survivors are often not included or considered in public discourses surrounding this topic and during this period of worldwide turmoil, little attention was allocated to their experiences. Focusing upon a Scottish sample, this talk draws attention to the idea of sexual-minority hyper-vulnerability amidst times of crisis. Among other areas, it will look at how the status of being in a sexual minority can amplify complexities in navigating difficult circumstances.
The speaker
Leia is a final year doctoral student at Robert Gordon University who recently submitted her PhD. She graduated with her undergraduate degree during the pandemic in 2020 and began her postgrad with the department later that year. Her research interests centre around domestic abuse, particularly across sexual-minority communities. She has been involved in various other projects in the domestic abuse field, looking at the impact of the pandemic on third-sector organisations and the police in rural, remote, and island communities. She is currently also working as a Research Officer for the Youth Justice Board of England and Wales, conducting different research projects on children’s journeys through the justice system.
