Managing monogamous stigma in polyamorous relationships (November 21st 18:00-19:30)
Monogamous marriage is sometimes called "the bedrock of society." Yet consensual non-monogamous relationship types, such as polyamory, are becoming increasingly popular. For example, recent polling in the USA suggests approx 22% are in them at some point, and for 12%, it is their relationship ideal. However, despite this, data shows non-monogamous relationships are often seen as inherently unstable or even pathological. Bringing together participants from the USA and Scotland, this talk introduces people in consensual non-monogamous configurations, their experiences of coming out, minority stress and their resilience in the face of social and legal pressures.
The speaker
Doris Füllgrabe is a relationship coach based in Brooklyn, NY, and holds an MSc in Applied Psychology. After providing corporate leadership development and cross-cultural training for over a decade, she works with private clients who want to create healthier, happier relationships. Recently, she has carried out and published research into stigma and resilience in consensual non-monogamous relationships, exploring the personal experiences of non-monogamists. Her findings contextualise the impact and expression of stigma and protective factors that help participants deal with the stressors.
