The Busoni Centenary Symposium
Busoni and His World
16th-17th July 2024 City, University of London, UK
The 2024 Busoni Centenary Symposium will re-examine the work and legacy of Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924), who remains an enigmatic presence in music history to this day and whose work is still largely unknown beyond a circle of initiates. The Symposium aims to challenge preconceptions, reset frames of reference and close knowledge gaps. Our keynote speakers will be Professor Paul Fleet (University of Newcastle) and Professor Erinn Knyt (University of Massachusetts Amherst).
The programme committee invites contributions embracing all aspects of Busoni’s life, work, influence and legacy, as well as wider contexts for Busoni and his world, with a questioning spirit in the manner of Busoni himself. Proposals can be for either a conference paper, 'provocation', performance, presentation or participation in a masterclass as detailed below.
Papers - submit an abstract of up to 250 words in length. Papers will be 30 minutes in length with 15 additional minutes for discussion.
Provocations - submit a question with 150 words of context to be framed in a 15 minute pitch followed by discussion.
Performances - should be between 30 to 45 minutes in duration. To apply, send am email stating what you will be playing, with a weblink to a 5-minute video recording of part of the performance.
Masterclass - Pianists are invited to participate in a masterclass lead by Professor Ian Pace. Apply by providing us with a weblink to a 5-minute audition video of the piece (or part of the piece) you would like to play in the masterclass.
Please email your proposed contribution to Fred Scott at [log in to unmask]
Deadliness:
- Paper and 'provocation' abstracts must be received by Monday 8 January 2024.
- Emails containing links to performance or masterclass audition videos should be submitted by 15 January 2024, and the email itself must clearly state whether the submission is for a performance or a masterclass participation, with more useful information welcome.
Abstracts and videos will be reviewed anonymously, and the programme committee aims to respond by Monday 19 February 2024. The symposium website, containing programme and details of registration, will be available after this initial phase.
Please email [log in to unmask] We look forward to hearing from you!
