Session: As part of the ‘new normal’ of ongoing, overlapping, and interconnected crises our session explores new strategies for reimagining and enhancing individual and community wellbeing (Börner 2023) across urban, suburban and rural environments. Multifaceted physical and mental health challenges such as climate change, the covid-19 pandemics, socio-economic disparities and socio-environmental injustices have had a profound impact on individuals and communities, while public policies still fall short of effectively addressing diverse lived experiences and needs both in the short and long-term (Andres et al. 2023). Therefore, this session aims to explore innovative participatory approaches across within and across diverse communities (Auerbach et al. 2022) for improving wellbeing while navigating ethical challenges (Tayebi et al. 2023). Participatory approach discussed in this session range from participatory (creative) community-based initiatives to co-design processes and participatory public policies for community resilience and wellbeing.
The focus of the panel will be centred on (but is not limited to) the following questions:
How can innovative participatory approaches help (re)imagine understandings of wellbeing in a poly-crisis context?
What participatory strategies have been successful in enhancing individual and community-wellbeing?
Which are the ethical challenges in designing participatory strategies for wellbeing that include diverse lived experiences?
Session organisers:
Susanne Börner, Assistant Professor in Human Geography, University of Birmingham
Jeremy Auerbach, Assistant Professor in Geography, University College Dublin
