Nutsa Kobakhidze (Assistant Professor/Director of the Comparative Education Research Centre (CERC) in the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong).
Tutoring for kindergarten admission is a relatively recent trend that is emerging both in Asia and on a global scale. In the context of highly competitive kindergartens, parents are dedicating their resources to provide their children with the best educational start. Some parents are opting for commercial educational services that includes training in social skills, assistance with portfolio and CV preparation, video and photo production, mock interviews, and parental consultations.
This talk is based on an empirical study involving qualitative interviews with 78 participants, including parents, teachers, tutors, and early childhood educators. It aims to shed light on the growing phenomenon of kindergarten admission tutoring in Hong Kong. This phenomenon undoubtedly entrenches social hierarchies, contributes to inequalities, and primarily favours middle-class parents. The study's findings have significant implications for children's education, mental health, and overall well-being.
Please book your tickets via the Eventbrite link provided and we very much look forward to seeing you there.
Best wishes,
Josie Gabi, Rachel Holmes & Christina MacRae
