Interactional Competence in Intercultural Communication: A Conversation between Carsten Roever and David Wei Dai
In this conversation between Prof Carsten Roever and Dr David Wei Dai, we will explore the intersection of interactional competence (IC) and intercultural communication. Interactional competence, understood as language users’ ability to communicate in extended, co-constructed discourse, is rapidly gaining prominence in second language acquisition and assessment research. However, IC has not so far been related to intercultural communication even though the question of how interactants configure their interactional resources to co-construct discourse in diverse cultural settings is a highly relevant question to both IC and intercultural communication research. We will discuss some of the challenges in relating IC to intercultural communication, and how such work can benefit research and practice in both areas.
