Bridging the Gap: Exploring GIS Approaches for Informal Settlements
Spatial data in Low-and-Middle-Income-Country (LMICs) cities are often incomplete, dated or unavailable. This gap is, in particular, a problem in informal settlements, which are often excluded from routine mapping updates. As a consequence, community groups, local governments, NGOs, and other actors do not have access to strategic data for urban policymaking, upgrading programmes and developing shared visions for a sustainable urban future. The second event of the UTC series on Data and Slums is dedicated to advances in GIS mapping of informal settlements.
The event aims to highlight the increasing importance of technologies and methodologies for mapping informal settlements worldwide by emphasizing that more routine spatial data created for and with informal communities is required. Four case studies are presented to provide contextualized insights on recent advancements and persisting challenges.
The interested audience is also invited to join us for a round table discussion with invited experts to answer some questions they might have.
Moderator: Prof.Dr. Julio Cesar Pedrassoli, Universidade Federal da Bahia.
Moderator Round Table: Dr. Monika Kuffer, Associated Professor at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente
Case Study 1 Presenter: Dennis Mwaniki, Spatial Data Expert at Data and Analytics Unit, UN-Habitat
Case Study 2 Presenter: Flávia Feitosa, Federal University of ABC.
Case Study 3 Presenters: Dr. Sophie Naue, Scientific lead and Innovation Specialist & Michael Hathorn Researcher and Data Scientist at UNITAC at the HafenCity University Hamburg
Case Study 4 Presenters: Angela Abascal Imizcoz, Research Associate at Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC), University of Glasgow) & Postdoctoral Researcher at ITC, University of Twente
In early November, we organize the third and last event on Slums and Data debating ideas and questions that have emerged in the process.
All the best
