Hi everyone,
The QAA has today launched the consultation<https://www.qaa.ac.uk/news-events/news/have-your-say-on-10-new-subject-benchmark-statements-consultation-now-open> for the revised Subject Benchmark Statement for Communication, Media, Film and Cultural Studies.
The consultation period will run for six weeks in the period 4th October – 15th November 2023.
We invite all interested parties to read the revised statement:
https://www.qaa.ac.uk/docs/qaa/sbs/sbs-for-consultation-media-film-and-cultural-studies.pdf?sfvrsn=3e0dae81_7
…and tell us what you think via an online survey:
https://qaa5.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/communications-sbs
We are looking for feedback on how the revised Subject Benchmark Statement define the nature of the subject area and the academic standards expected of graduates in our field. There are also questions inviting specific feedback on different sections (see below).
For those of you familiar with the previous Communication, Media, Film and Cultural Studies SBS, this revised statement will look very different. That is partly because the QAA has introduced a new structure and four new sections, which are consistent across all revised subject benchmark statements.
As an Advisory Group we felt our fields are particularly well positioned to address some of these new sections, and you will see this reflected in the revised statement. We have also included recognition of the diversity and agility of our field, in addressing societal challenges as well as ever changing technological developments.
Despite some significant updates to structure and some new additional material, this remains an evolution of previous subject benchmark statements. You will find much of the old content in there, though sometimes updated or moved around slightly.
QAA SUBJECT BENCHMARK STATEMENTS
The QAA Subject Benchmark Statements describe the nature of study and the academic standards expected of graduates in specific subject areas, and show what graduates might reasonably be expected to know, do and understand at the end of their studies. They are used as reference points in the design, delivery and review of academic programmes, and are reviewed regularly.
ADDITIONS TO ALL STATEMENTS
QAA is committed to ensuring the Statements reflect developments in the subject communities and agendas in the higher education sector. To this end all of the statements have included consideration of the below topic, aligned specifically to new sections of all the SBSs:
* Education for sustainable development
* Equality, diversity and inclusivity - with a focus both on inclusion in the context of curriculum content and student characteristics
* Accessibility and the requirements of disabled students
* Enterprise and/or entrepreneurship education.
WHAT FEEDBACK DO WE WANT?
The consultation survey is fairly brief, and invites feedback as follows:
* Overall, does the revised Subject Benchmark Statement continue to define the nature of the subject area and the academic standards expected of graduates?
* Does the information in the introductory sections successfully describe the context, characteristics and purpose of the subject?
* Does the section on benchmark standards adequately cover the skills expected of a graduate in the subject area?
* Do the sections on learning and teaching, content, and assessment provide an appropriate indication of these aspects of the subject area?
* Do the sections on Education for Sustainable Development, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, Accessibility and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion clearly express the needs of the subject and students in relation to these areas?
* Any further observations relating to the revised Subject Benchmark Statement not covered in the questions above.
All the best,
Einar, Sorcha, and Jamie
