Dear Colleagues,
Final Call for Papers for a New Book: "Handbook of Nature-Based Solutions to Mitigation and
Adaptation to Climate Change"
Over recent years, nature-based solutions (NbS) have gained popularity as tools to ameliorate the effects of climate change, while slowing down the global warming process. More specifically, the potential of NbS has been explored in terms of meeting greenhouse gas emissions targets, and fostering climate change adaptation.
NbS are methods that use and enhance nature to improve social and environmental challenges (Seddon et al., 2019). It involves several multifaceted actions, that work sustainably to restore and protect the natural environment while helping people. Therefore, these solutions are useful in climate change adaptation and mitigation (Cohen-Shacham et al., 2016). There are 3 main areas which NbS may target, namely reducing exposure, reducing sensitivity, and supporting adaptive capacity.
Reducing exposure refers to protecting areas from existing climate change effects (Seddon et al., 2020).
There is a perceived need to document and promote experiences related to NbS, and to apply these in different contexts. It is against this background that the "Handbook of Nature-Based Solutions to Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change" is being produced. The publication will showcase experiences related to NbS from round the world. In particular, it will gather examples of projects, studies and the latest thinking on NbS, which can serve the purpose of inspiring and fostering further works in this key area.
The publication will be part of the world´s leading peer-reviewed book series on matters related
to climate change management: https://www.springer.com/series/8740 published by Springer.
This will be a high-impact, high citations piece. The peer-reviewed nature of the publication means that it
officially counts as a publication output for promotion and tenure purposes. Over 2.000 researchers
have published in the series over the years, the latest volume being the Handbook of Climate
Change Resilience (https://link.springer.com/referencework/10.1007/978-3-319-93336-8) with 3 volumes
and around 200 authors and the African Handbook of Climate Change Adaptation
(https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-45106-6) which is open access and has had over
29.000 downloads.
The editorial team is now asking for expressions of interest to contribute to the
"Handbook of Nature-Based Solutions to Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change"
with the following details:
1. Title of the possible contribution
2. A 200 words description of its scope
3. Names and contact details of the authors
The deadline for abstracts is 20th November 2023. Full papers are due by 20th February 2024. The expressions of interest should be sent by the above deadline to: [log in to unmask]
Further details on the submissions and the format to be followed, will be discussed
with the authors whose outlines have been accepted.
Rgds,
The Editors
