Jeff,
given the difference between your experience and Stephan's, this seems
to be specific to particular MacOS platforms, which makes it hard for
me to investigate/fix (I don't have any kind of Mac).
But it's presumably something to do with the Look&Feel provided by
the platform, and it may be possible to do something about it by
setting system properties at runtime
(http://www.starlink.ac.uk/topcat/sun253/jvmProperties.html).
One of the following might help:
-Dapple.awt.application.appearance=system
-Dapple.awt.application.appearance=NSAppearanceNameDarkAqua
-Dapple.awt.application.appearance=NSAppearanceNameAqua
-Dswing.defaultlaf=javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel
If that doesn't sort you out, and you're sufficiently motivated to
help me by trying some other things out, get back to me off-list
and I'll see if I come up with some other ideas. If anything comes
of it I will report back here.

This seems to not be an issue if I switch to “Light” mode in System Preferences (I prefer to work in Dark mode). Does anyone know a way to make these show successfully, or am I stuck switching to light mode every time I use Topcat?
