Dear All, and especially the science journalists on this list,
In case some of you might be interested in writing about the process of
developing visual and interactive forms of public communication of
science, please read on:
Our team is developing a new way to do comic-book storytelling on the
science of animal behaviour and welfare. "The Mind of a Horse" will
combine comic-book art, in-depth text and interactive content via a QR
code. The book will come out in November, and it has already got quite
an enthusiastic reception: pre-orders have been placed from 18
countries.
The process of developing a book of science comics that works for many
types of readers has been an interesting journey. One of the challenges
stems from the pre-existing polarisation among horse enthusiasts around
horse welfare issues. In addition to being based on the sciences of
animal behaviour, welfare and cognition, in the planning process we have
also recruited advice from social sciences to develop storytelling
tactics that invite readers to emphasize with other peoples'
perspectives.
Should some of you be interested in writing about a behind-the-scenes
look at the process, our team would happily be available for an
interview. If you'd like to have a video chat first, to find out more
about us and to decide whether this is something you would like to
cover, we'd be happy to do that too.
The illustrators Maija Karala and Ville Sinkkonen are internationally
known for their scientifically accurate animal art, previously
commissioned by several organisations such as the BBC. My role in the
book is that of the main author, with a background in research on
ethology and animal cognition (having been a research fellow at the
University of Bristol, UK), combined with a few decades of professional
experience in public communication of science in my native Finland,
recognized by the main awards available in the country.
The book's publisher is the Finland-based, internationally operating
science communication and research company Arador Innovations. Other
projects in the pipeline include, among others, a virtual reality
experience about the welfare and training of dogs, and a mobile game on
the cognition and conservation of fish.
