Quick Fix DIY conference – call for papers, deadline 15th of September, 2023
The conference
Thursday the 5th of October to Saturday the 7th of October 2023
5-6th of October: will involve academic presentations and the 7th of October will be focused more on practitioner-based activities.
This 3-day conference will discuss and explore the ‘quick fix’ everyday life strategies of people in China and beyond. Indeed, in both the Global South and Global North, scholars have documented how people and communities – particularly communities who have been hit by neo-liberal policies and austere socio-economic and environmental circumstances – utilise ‘quick fix’ strategies to remain resilient. As well as the speedy and cheap maintenance of technological objects, commentators have also noted the rise in new forms of recycling, upcycling and self-reliant ways of living that are often a response to limited economic, environmental, and educational resources.
To attend, we welcome abstracts of 150-200 words, and we are looking for papers on the following topics:
• # cultures and communities of quick fix
• # the politics of quick fix
• # strategies for living informally
• # self-reliance
• # recycling
• # up-cycling
• # self-build
• # Architectural recycling and upcycling
• # Informal housing
• # neo-liberalism and austere living
• # Austerity
• # sustainability, upcycling and recycling
• # Freeganism and free-cycling
• # The politics of self-reliance and resilience.
• # problems with the concept of resilience and/or being resilient
• # rethinking waste
• # In China we also want to explore Chengzhongcun, or "villages-in-the-city" 城中村 since ‘quick fix’ and informal (albeit sometimes illegal) housing is often a major feature of these sites.
Please send your abstracts of no more than 150-200 words to [log in to unmask]
