Dear cephalopodists,
In the Cephalopods Working Group of ICES 2023-2025, a cephalopod identification tool for fishing purposes is being developed using machine learning. For this, we need as many photos of the species of concern as possible, dozens or even hundreds. The list of the primarily important species is below. They will be the starting point of this "experiment" that, hopefully, will be continued to cover as many commercial species worldwide as possible. The photos do not need to be perfect, as the machine has to learn from all angles, in order to be more effective in identifying on board, and a resolution of 200-300 dpi is sufficient. We are interested in fresh photos of whole specimens as well as their diagnostic features.
Please send us also its metadata (survey, latitude and longitude in sexagesimal degrees, depth in meters, DML in millimeters, sex, and weight in grams, if available), together with each photo. But do not hesitate to send the photo even if some information is absent.
We would greatly appreciate getting photos of the following species (dead/live/frozen but not preserved):
• Octopus vulgaris
• Eledone cirrhosa
• Eledone moschata
• Loligo vulgaris
• Loligo forbesii
• Alloteuthis spp
• Illex coindetii
• Todaropsis eblanae
• Todarodes sagittatus
• Ommastrephes bartrami
• Sthenoteuthis pteropus
• Sepia officinalis
• Sepia elegans
• Sepia orbignyana
Thank you very much in advance for your help.
