PhD Studentship: Investigating Selective Attention in ME/CFS
We are pleased to announce a fully funded PhD studentship opportunity hosted by the Department of Psychology & Vision Sciences in the University of Leicester, funded by ME Research UK. This studentship is open to both UK and international applicants.
Project Title: Impaired Selective Attention as a Cognitive and Neurophysiological Marker of ME/CFS
Supervisors: Dr. Doug Barrett ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) & Dr. David Souto ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>)
Start Date: 01 October 2023
Closing Date for Applications: 31 July 2023
Project Overview: The project seeks to explore cognitive deficits in individuals with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), with a particular focus on attentional deficits. The goal of this research is to gain a clearer understanding of the attentional issues experienced by those with ME/CFS, including visual overload and difficulties filtering relevant visual information. The research will utilize laboratory-based and online computer-based tasks to measure selective attention during search in individuals with and without ME/CFS, comparing sensory thresholds, behavioural responses, and electrophysiological markers.
Funding Details: The studentship is funded for three years and includes a stipend that matches UKRI rates, UK tuition fees, equipment costs, and participant payments. Please note that international applicants will be required to fund the difference between UK and international fees.
Entry Requirements: Applicants should have a First or Upper Second Class UK honours degree, or an equivalent qualification from outside the UK, in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, computer science, or a related subject area. A Masters degree and experience in visual psychophysics, eye movements, or human electrophysiology (EEG) would be beneficial.
