Dear Religion and Gender list members,

Find below the announcement for the 15 June online lecture and conversation about non-religion and gender, in Egypt and please forward it to those who might be interested!

On June 15, REGENN (Religion and Gender Network in the Netherlands) organizes an online lunch lecture, held by prof. Karin van Nieuwkerk (Radboud University) on the topic of Nonreligion and Gender in Egypt. The event is scheduled from 12:00-13:30 CEST, attendance is free.

In Egypt, nonreligion has recently become a major concern for religious and political authorities and blasphemy charges are regularly used against nonbelievers. Accordingly, coming out for nonbelieving is very difficult and sometimes dangerous. However, especially since the 2011-revolution, young people do contest the religious dominance in the public sphere and speak out, particularly in the relatively safe space of social media – or confidential interviews.

In her lecture, Karin van Nieuwkerk explores how young male and female former Muslims and Copts are 'making sense of nonreligion'.

A first response will be provided by dr. Yaser Ellethy, head of the Centre for Islamic Theology at the Faculty of Religion and Theology - VU University Amsterdam, and president of the European Society for Intercultural Theology and Interreligious Studies (ESITIS). A second response will be provided by dr. Nella van den Brandt, Marie Curie Fellow at Coventry University, working on the topic of women leaving religion in the Netherlands and the UK.

For more information and for registration, please visit the REGENN website at:
http://regenn.nl/?p=495

Kind regards,

Nella van den Brandt.
