I was about to type a message very similar to Teresa's. Whenever I have heard from or thought about Andrew, his 1985 unofficial entry into Banyuls across the border from Spain comes to mind. If there is a place for an afterlife, he probably just climbed over the fence to get in.
Sad times indeed for the cephalopod research community. However, all of the CIAC old-timers can feel good about the diverse growth of the community of researchers at all stages of their careers, many of whom have been commenting in these discussions.

Dear All
Another sad loss indeed. Just recently he was very much engaged in the octopus culture discussion. So sad! A good scientist and a very special person.
About Andrew's character and picking up the story told to Graham by Peter, YES, it was true. That is how I met Andrew Packard. I was just a young PhD student from Tromsoe, Norway, doing some experiments with Boletzky in Banyuls. Just by coincidence, there was one of the first meetings of CIAC in Banyuls (1985?). That's when I met most of the cephalopods experts at that time, one of them Andrew Packard.
He had just arrived from his cross of the Pyrenees walking. His legs completely scratched, still with blood, and the body full of mosquito bites. However, full of energy, with a philosophy of life that for a young woman like me was fantastic. And I listened with much attention, my eyes wide open trying to retain these ideas, some of them quite original. After that, every time we would meet (few times, unfortunately) we would always talk about this story, and laughed.
There are many other stories with Andrew, some probably already with the normal touch of exaggeration but the basis are true. Andrew was really an original character, and he loved the original.
We will miss you Andrew!
My most sincere condolences to his family.
Teresa

Dear all,
Another sad loss, so soon after Eric Hochberg.
Andrew always retained a keen interest in cephalopods, as seen from his recent contributions to the debate about cuttlefish culture. Noting Ian’s story, I recall Peter Boyle telling me (many years ago) that, en route to a meeting, which involved travelling between France and Spain, Andrew decided to get off the train and walked part of the way across the Pyrenees. I have no verification of this story but Peter assured me it was true!

Graham

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I have been informed that the dear Andrew (Packard) passed away. A very sad news!
I am sure we all agree in recognizing his pivotal contribution to science and cephalopod biology, physiology and behavior.
He acted as reference for many generations operating in the field.
A great loss for science, our community and all friends and people he met in his journey.
