Journal of Gender Studies: Special Issue: Intersecting Identities: Being Queer and Religious

The broad objective of this special issue is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the lived realities of LGBTQ+ religious individuals. Specifically, the issue aims to explore how religious practices, faith and spirituality intersect with non-normative genders and sexualities to investigate how these intersections shape and are shaped by the everyday experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. Through a theoretical and empirical examination of these relationships, the issue seeks to provide new insights into the categories of gender, sexuality, and religion, and to offer a critical perspective on their relevance in contemporary contexts.

Grounded in an awareness of the dynamics of gender and sexuality, this special issue seeks to highlight research on lived religion. It endeavours to move beyond the binary query of whether individuals can only either be religious or LGBTQ+ to explore how they can be both through combined identities leading to empowering and agentic processes. This special issue will seek papers that explore the intricate dynamics between religion, gender, and sexuality within various contexts, including cultural and geographical ones. We aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of these relationships across diverse locations, spiritual beliefs, gender identities, and sexual orientations.

Possible topics might include but are not limited to:

-	LGBTQ+ intersections with religion;
-	Embodied experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals within religious and spiritual contexts;
-	Queer religious geographies;
-	The role of activism and institutional change within religious contexts, with a focus on non-normative genders and sexualities;
-	Empirical and theoretical analyses of the intersections between religion, feminism, and LGBTQ+ individuals;
-	Experiences of non-binary and trans individuals;
-	Intersex people, religion, faith, and spirituality;
-	The impact of colonialism on the intersections of religion, gender, and sexuality;
-	Religion and the politics of reproductive rights and bodily autonomy;
-	The role of religion in shaping gender norms and expectations;
-	The intersections of race, ethnicity, and religion in LGBTQ+ identities and experiences;
-	The impact of globalisation and transnationalism on religion, gender, and sexuality;
-	The experiences of LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers in relation to religion;
-	The role of spirituality in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals and communities;
-	Intersections of disability, religion, gender, and sexuality;
-	The impact of secularisation on religion, gender, and sexuality;

Every proposal will be given constructive feedback by 15th December 2023. In the event of abstract acceptance, we will invite you to submit a complete manuscript no later than 30th June 2024.
