Dear colleagues,
I'm working with services across my organization to gather born digital (unstructured) records. We've devised and piloted a fairly manual transfer process at a small scale and are now looking at rolling it out more widely.
At the moment we don't have organisation wide access to DP tools so in a bid to get as much metadata as possible from the transferring services/areas I was looking for Microsoft alternatives that would make it reasonably straightforward for departments to supply us with some useful information. I've come across Excel Power Query as a means for populating an excel sheet with data that could include file name, file type, date created, size, filepath etc. I thought from a pragmatic point of view it might at least flag things up like missing files.
Does anyone use this tool for this purpose? And is anyone aware of any caveats that I ought to bear in mind? Once we have access to the files we'll be able to process them using more appropriate DP tools.
Best wishes,
Claire
