This Thursday (15th June), 3pm to 6pm, University of Reading (Edith Morley G44) and by Zoom (link below, and programme attached). All welcome!
Speakers:
Keith Grieves (Kingston University), ‘A sense of place, the freedom to walk and rest and preserving the Surrey uplands, 1920-50’
Eirini Saratsi (Natural England), ‘Sense of Place: Sense of here or Sense of there?’
Jeremy Burchardt (University of Reading), ‘Why does landscape matter to us?’.
The symposium will be followed by a book launch for ‘Lifescapes: The Experience of Landscape in England, 1870-1960’, published by CUP last month. There is no need to book but please email me if you will be attending in person so we have an idea about numbers.
For those attending virtually, the Zoom link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85716001507?pwd=Sk1NZXN0MjFGY3pVb3pnV2JGZFhvdz09
The first speaker is Keith Grieves, who has an unparalleled knowledge of landscape preservation in the Surrey hills. His research on how popular pressure, local and national voluntary organisations and local and national government sometimes worked together and sometimes obstructed each other with respect to landscape and nature conservation has many lessons for the present day. Keith will be followed by Eirini Saratsi, PI of the AALERT AHRC research network, which aims to explore the potential of art and art practice to open up access to landscape. Eirini is a Cultural Geography, until recently at the University of Reading, but has just started a new role as Senior Specialist with Natural England. She is a lively and engaging speaker and is sure to give an interesting talk.
After a tea break, I will talk about what I think I learnt in researching and writing ‘Lifescapes’ about why landscape matters to us. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion after each paper, so I hope it will be an interesting afternoon for everyone able to be there, whether in person or virtually.
Best wishes,
Jeremy Burchardt (Associate Professor in Rural History, University of Reading, and PI of the ‘Changing Landscapes’ AHRC Research Network)
