Sands & Tommy's come together to launch landmark

report on Saving Babies' Lives

The Sands & Tommy's Policy Unit recently launched their landmark report 'Saving Babies' Lives 2023: A report on progress'.<https://sands.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8fdd1855b100a116af68c4ceb&id=443a738a7d&e=e1d6017c0b>

This report pulls together data from a wide range of sources for the first time to give everyone a shared understanding of the burden of pregnancy and baby loss across the UK. It paints a concerning picture of stalling progress to reduce stillbirth and neonatal deaths. It also outlines that despite Government commitments to act on the findings of recent reviews of maternity services, this still hasn't led to the fundamental change needed to save more babies' lives.

The report was launched in Parliament on 15th May with MPs, Peers, researchers, campaigners and many others from across the pregnancy and baby loss sector in attendance. The responsible Minister, Maria Caulfield MP, spoke at the event and made commitments to ensuring pregnancy and baby loss remain a Government priority.

Updates from the National Bereavement Care Pathway

and Hospital Liasion team

On April 26th the National Bereavement Care Pathway Scotland launch took place in Edinburgh, with fantastic presentations from the Scottish Minister for Women's Health and Public Health, bereavement midwives and a wide range of healthcare professionals and third-sector organisations. The biggest impact of the day came from the 10 parents who bravely shared their own experiences of loss and bereavement care. The voices of parents affected by pregnancy and baby loss are at the heart of NBCP Scotland and we are thankful for their invaluable support.

The NBCP Scotland project will continue to work with healthcare professionals and parents across Scotland in a range of Learning Events throughout 2023/2024.

See more about the NBCP in Scotland<https://sands.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8fdd1855b100a116af68c4ceb&id=81bec4d91d&e=e1d6017c0b>

This is free to access and includes videos, guided activities and information to support you in getting the NBCP standards to stick at your workplace. If you have any feedback on the toolkit's contents or resources, please contact the Bereavement Care and Hospital Liaison team<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

Many of you will be aware of Hospital Liaison Volunteers (HLVs) who ensure that hospital bereavement care teams are aware of and know how to access Sands bereavement support, guidance, resources, and training.

We have recently trained and recruited further HLVs in hospitals across England and hope to recruit a volunteer for every hospital in England and Scotland with expansion into Northern Ireland and Wales in the future.

If you would like to learn more about HLVs or work with Sands to recruit one for your hospital, please contact us at the button below.

ELfH post-mortem consent package

The ELfH perinatal post-mortem consent package has been developed to address an educational gap and the limited opportunities for face-to-face learning in the already over-stretched national perinatal pathology service.

The resource is clearly mapped to the Human Tissue Authority guidance with the input of the perinatal pathology team at Birmingham Women's Hospital. The package provides comprehensive training for health professionals and covers specific legal aspects of perinatal post-mortem consent. There are many case studies to enable learners to develop a deeper knowledge base pertaining to this important area of practice.

NIHR Evidence Collection publishes report on

improvements to maternity services

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) have recently published a report as a part of their Collection series titled 'Maternity services: evidence to support improvement'.

The report highlights evidence in priority areas, identified in the East Kent report, to support high-quality care and avoid safety issues in maternity services. These include kind & compassionate care, teamwork, identifying poor performance and organisational oversight.

Sands wins prestigious campaigning award

Sands were recently the winner of the prestigious 'Amplifying Voices' Award at the Sheila McKechnie (SMK)<https://sands.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8fdd1855b100a116af68c4ceb&id=8844b77b3d&e=e1d6017c0b> National Campaigner Awards 2023. This was given for our campaign to secure a confidential enquiry<https://sands.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8fdd1855b100a116af68c4ceb&id=e05a299509&e=e1d6017c0b> for Asian and Asian British babies.

Our campaign called on the Government to fund a confidential enquiry into Asian and Asian British baby deaths that would run in parallel with the enquiry that they had already announced into the deaths of Black and Black British babies. We felt it was so important that they ran together to make sure that lessons are learnt and preventable deaths are avoided. Findings from the confidential enquiries will be published this December.

We hope this award shines a spotlight on the crucial work needed to ensure no family is overlooked, inequalities are addressed, and lives are saved. We would like to thank all of our supporters, particularly those from South Asian communities, who shared our campaign, wrote to or met with their MP, and called on the Government to commission the enquiry.

Local Maternity and Neonatal Systems equality &

equity project

As part of the Maternity Consortium<https://sands.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8fdd1855b100a116af68c4ceb&id=8dba952b38&e=e1d6017c0b>'s work on the VCSE Health and Wellbeing Alliance<https://sands.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8fdd1855b100a116af68c4ceb&id=35b7a59384&e=e1d6017c0b>, we are delivering a project to support the implementation of Local Maternity and Neonatal Systems' (LMNSs) equity and equality plans. We are looking to speak with anyone involved in the maternity and/or neonatal space (services, service user voice reps, MVPs, VCSEs etc.) to understand:
How you have been involved in the development and implementation of equity and equality plans to date?
What's working well and what are some of the challenges to implementation?
What resources you think might be helpful for the Maternity Consortium to develop to support implementation?
What are some examples of good practice?
Please get in touch to share your thoughts via email or arrange a call to discuss.

Update on the CORONET study

The CORONET research study has been exploring the shift to remote antenatal care that came about due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the potential impacts on pregnant people, healthcare professionals and health systems. Their most recent publication<https://sands.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8fdd1855b100a116af68c4ceb&id=6cfd57408e&e=e1d6017c0b> suggests that the shift to remote antenatal care has made it harder for some pregnant people to access antenatal care, navigate the relevant services and fully engage with consultations. The shift also risks increasing existing inequalities that can lead to poorer outcomes.
