SPIRITS IN STONE, just released by Atelier Editions:
a new book by Professor Anati on menhirs and menhir statues.
The new analytical methods of conceptual anthropology led to a
surprising disclosure: already 5,000 years ago, earlier than the
polytheism of the Greek-Roman Olympus, and even earlier than the
Mosaic revelation, there was a monotheistic cult in the heart of
Europe, in the Camonica Valley. In the Chalcolithic period and the
early Bronze Age, the cult of ancestral spirits evolved into that of
the spirit of heaven and earth.
The iconography of the menhir statues and monumental compositions seem
to evidence the embryo of a conceptual turning point that would
dominate Europe for millennia: the cult of the soul of ancestors gave
birth to the concept of divinity.
