Hi all

Guy is correct, a player doesn't remember your choices but your device should. I was investigating iPhone and iOS accessibility settings and then wondered why Netflix always had audio description set to on by default. Cos I'd told it - at the device level - that that's what I wanted! And I think Netflix has audio description available for every show it publishes. YouTube is quite far behind, it did some pilots a couple of years ago but at the moment there is no AD option in the player.

If only Google had more resources I'm sure they'd get it sorted!

There is nothing in the WCAG (and hence nothing in the PSBAR regulations) to say they should be turned on or off initially, so it is up to you which you choose. The critical thing in all educational videos, of course, is to ensure the captions have been edited to make them accurate.

Most people here suggest it is more useful to users to have them switched on by default, so I suggest you go with that. And a majority of students use captions on a frequent or regular basis so it may likely suit them as well. (On a personal level, I generally use captions due to surrounding noise, and I get quite annoyed when I have to switch them on repeatedly for each new video I watch. I sort of think the video player should remember my choice though I know it doesn't!) Regards, Guy Hickling, Accessibility Consultant
