Researcher Vulnerability Workshop with Dr Chloe Steadman from Manchester Metropolitan University.
This Methods Masterclass will be run in person on the University of Manchester Campus from 10.00am until 12.00pm on Thursday, 18 May 2023.
Please be aware that there are a limited amount of spaces, and that we will work on a first-come first served basis.
In this interactive and reflective in-person workshop, we will be exploring the topic of researcher vulnerability together – the physical and/or emotional harm an individual may encounter when conducting research. Whether feeling upset about participants’ emotional stories when listening back to and analysing interviews, or anxious about how future readers might perceive more vulnerable academic writing.
We will begin the workshop by reflecting on what we actually mean by the term ‘researcher vulnerability’ and how we could define it. Dr Steadman will then share her personal experiences of researcher vulnerability by providing a brief presentation about her recently published Journal of Marketing Management paper: Remembering and Anticipating Researcher Vulnerability: An Autoethnographic Tale. Participants will then engage in interactive workshop activities designed to explore their own experiences of researcher vulnerability and the following questions:
How has researcher vulnerability manifested in your own research experiences?
What makes an effective piece of vulnerable academic writing?
What are the key barriers to expressing researcher vulnerabilities in academia?
How can we move towards an academic culture more open about researcher vulnerability?
Please note that you will be required to identify a piece of vulnerable academic writing that you admire in advance of the workshop (e.g. a paper, chapter, poem, blog post etc.), as these examples will be used to generate workshop discussions.
