Title: Modelling the success of crowdfunding
Abstract:
Our paper explores factors that influence financing proportions for crowdfunding projects by modifying various regression models. Our findings demonstrate that offering various types of rewards, such as interview opportunities and product incentives, can increase the likelihood of achieving higher financing proportions. Furthermore, we introduce two tree-based regression models, the Hybrid Tree-based Linear Regression (HTLR) and the Hybrid Forest-based Linear Regression (HFLR), which outperform the traditional linear regression model in both explanatory and predictive power. We attribute this to the inclusion of nonlinear terms and the ability to handle outliers. Our results show that the HFLR model is superior to the HTLR model when an appropriate loop termination condition is applied, due to its ability to combine results from multiple decision trees and account for joint effects of factors.

Speaker: Ryan Defina
Title: On the Statistics of Deposit Insurance
Abstract:
Recent disruptions to the global financial system have merely underscored the importance of a well-coordinated financial sector safety net. Deposit insurance is a fundamental tool to protect depositors and contribute to financial stability. The International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) was formed in May 2002 to enhance the effectiveness of deposit insurance systems by promoting guidance and international cooperation. Throughout we explore key metrics for appraising the effectiveness of deposit insurance systems and provide a snapshot of the current landscape.
About Ryan Defina:
Ryan Defina has been working out of the Switzerland-based International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) since July 2018. He is a senior researcher with a focus on pertinent issues relating to deposit insurance and financial stability, contributing to numerous IADI publications. He also leads the statistics and reporting function within IADI. Previously, Ryan was a central banker at the Reserve Bank of Australia and a statistical methodologist at the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Beyond his day-to-day activities, Ryan is chair of the Royal Statistical Society's Finance and Economics Section.
The RSS Finance and Economics Section is looking for new committee members. The RSS Finance and Economics Section is newly established following a successful three years of operating as a special interest group. We are pleased to be able to contribute to the RSS strategic goals and offer a further conduit for the promotion of statistical literacy and expertise. Our group seeks to foster and develop working relationships between statisticians, economists and other professionals in finance, economics, actuarial and related commercial and policy areas. We have 6-8 online committee meetings per year to organise seminars/workshops and other events each year.
If you are interested in becoming a committee member, please email Dr Jia Shao at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
