Dear All,
This is a reminder regarding a call for a panel on the GPE of AI for the ISA San Francisco April 3rd-6th next year (www.isanet.org/Conferences/ISA2024/Call).
The panel:
The Global Political of Artificial Intelligence – Same old issues or something new?
Amongst the hype – both promise and fear – around AI, many of the underlying issues are in fact very familiar to scholars of Global/International Political-Ecomomy. First of all, the production networks and value chains through which the technology is produced reflect many of the same issues – primarily, inequality – evident in other areas. Second, ownership of production is central as AI becomes increasingly irreversible as an infrastructural tool in education and healthcare. Third, AI reflects and, potentially, reinforces existing relations of power, as evident in studies warning of data bias. None of these issues are new but, of course, what marks out the ‘new’ is the amplification and rate of acceleration made possible via AI. Yet, does AI’s impact go further? Are there examples where AI is restructuring – or has the potential to restructure – global political-economic relations? This panel invites both theoretical and empirical studies exploring these questions both reflecting the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ of the GPE of AI.
