Dear Anaïs

In regard to John Percy I attach three references that might be of interest to you. I do have reference to a few other Geological Survey & Museum works to which he contributed or in which he is referred to, but you may be aware of these (e.g. Memoir on iron ores, and Museum catalogues).

The 'archive' item included in the attached was brought to my attention by the British Geological Survey archivist, Andrew L. Morrison, but he could find no other archived items under Percy's name.

However, we are quite likely to have some of his correspondence at BGS (Keyworth, Nottingham), but buried amongst official Survey and Museum correspondence. I am currently calendaring all Survey and Museum correspondence from 1832 onward, but have only got as far as 1851, mostly as regards original letters, but I haven't yet gone thoroughly through the copy-books of official correspondence, which will include transcripts of letters for which we don't have originals. The volume that I am currently working through (Original letters to the Director General of the Geological Survey and Museum, 1849-1853) contains a report by Percy describing the work done in the Metallurgical Laboratory during the year 1852. Each letter book has an index, so it would be possible to check the contents of each volume fairly easily once the volumes have been got up from the strongroom, though they are boxed folios, so requires a bit of effort.

From about 1853 there is the annually published Report of the Department of Science and Art, which includes an annual report from the Geological Survey, Museum and School of Mines, which we hold at BGS. Presumably, however, Percy would have continued to submit manuscript annual reports to the Director General, which in theory should be amongst the correspondence, but it can be a bit hit-and-miss as to what letters made it into the letter 'guard books' at the time.

Hope this is of some help.

Dear all,

I am a PhD student researching the mineralogical collection of John Percy (nineteenth century metallurgist). I’ve found the notes that he produced while writing his Metallurgy: Iron and Steel (at IoM3 library) , but I can’t seem to find the notes associated with his other volumes of Metallurgy. I am specifically looking for the notes for his volume on Fuels, but would welcome information on any of the others, or any documents relating to John Percy at all.

I would appreciate any leads!

Thank you,

Anaïs
