Hi Mike,
Thanks for getting in touch. I think we might be in a slightly better situation with regards to a simple link: we're using the Publish component of Syllabus Plus, so in a single click students can link out (authenticated via SSO) to a view of their personalised timetable in Publish.
We're wondering if we can do one better than that and surface timetabling info directly in Moodle. I agree that the Moodle calendar is underused and perhaps a bit too cumbersome to show on the dashboard, so we're looking at a block, something like https://moodle.org/plugins/block_timetable, to give a snippet view of say the next 3 upcoming timetabled events, with the option to link-out for a full view of the timetable in Publish.
As I said, it's early days and we need to do more work exploring the UX and system performance implications. Happy to share more on this as it evolves over the coming weeks and months.
Kind regards,
Matt

Hi Matt,
here at City we introduced a simple link out to our timetabling system (was Scientia Syllabus+, now Semestry MyTimetable). The link is created inside a Moodle dashboard block that we add to each course page. It takes the course shortname and uses that to search for a timetable in the external system and then adds a link if one is found. We decided not to try and sync into calendars or anything like that. The Moodle calendar is not really used by our staff or students. The convenience of a link out is really appreciated even if it isn't displayed neatly inside Moodle itself.
