The Bekaa valley, the land between the mountains, has both benefited and suffered from its special topographical and thus geopolitical location in the northern-central Levant. This paper will draw special attention to this specific geographic area and reevaluate the often proclaimed affiliations of the valley to political entities like Aram-Damascus. It does so by taking a look at the archaeological record of the Bekaa itself with a special view at the early centuries of the Iron Age. It compares this data with the archaeological information from regions in close communicative (not necessarily physical) proximity. In doing so, we will take a look at changes taking place in the transition from the Late Bronze to the Iron Age and during the course of the earlier Iron Age and evaluate how these changes might be connected with the Bekaa’s specific and transforming geopolitical placement within its broader economic and political setting.
