DEMYSTIFYING THE DIVA: HANDEL'S KEY ROLES
(Research event at the Royal Academy of Music - Friday 17 March, David Josefowitz Recital Hall, 6-8pm.)
Academy PhD researcher Victoria Hodgkinson explores historical and contemporary understandings of notable roles written by Handel for two of his most renowned singers, Margherita Durastanti and Francesca Cuzzoni, and discusses how these findings may impact vocal and dramatic typecast and casting practices today.
The lecture will examine female performance identity in Handel’s operas with reference to the Fach system, critical reception, trends in artistic practice and the influence of the historical singer as an interpretative source.
Investigating trends and developments in casting is important as it allows us better to understand the ways in which we form assumptions about the types of singers we deem ‘appropriate’ for the repertoire today. As such, Victoria will outline how this method of questioning and analysis can be beneficial for both practitioners and audiences, and most specifically the wider community of developing opera singers within and beyond the Royal Academy of Music.
The event is free but ticketed.
